“Of blood & bones, his shelter…”
The monster in the woods
Grenggt is one of the few truly mean-spirited creatures in Bos…
A most silent place
TO THE SOUTH-EAST of Glorious Kratat lies the vast Sutwette* forest. On the far side of this great green barrier lies an unnaturally quiet cove. That place, called Kwynbos*, is dreadfully silent; the myriad sounds of birds and critters, burling deer and snorting boars are absent here… signs of anger & grief are imprinted on the trees, marked on the rocks.
The source of this dread is GRENGGT, a creature descended from accidental(?) union between man and Grunnethorn*.
Filled with anger & fear
LIKE MOST CREATURES in Bos, Grenggt possesses a fair amount of intelligence; early in his years his stalking of the forest borders brought him into contact with civilized communities, and by eavesdropping -and stealing bits & pieces around the farms- he slowly gained an awareness of the world.
Most beings who gain insight into the workings of Bos do this with joy and interest; they embrace what they learn even if it is not to their liking. Grenggt, however, outright refuses to admit that anything outside of his arboreal realm is real, and considers the forester settlements as evil manifestations of his worst nightmare: the demise of his home.
Traumatized by watching lumberjacks chop down trees, hack through the undergrowth and hunt for game, Grenggt withdrew deep into the woods and occupied what is now called the Kwynbos, the most secluded, shaded part of Sutwette. This area has no undergrowth, the trees are tall as hills and food is hard to come by. Grenggt has turned to eating anything he can, thus turning into a rare menace in Bos: a full-fledged carnivore.
His lair is scattered with remains of all kinds of vermin, critters, and even bones that seem a tad too familiar to the anthropomorph breeds of Bos. Sometimes he climbs up to the roof of the trees to rummage through nests and catch birds.
Guarded by the forest
Although Grenggt is mean and cruel to a degree very uncommon to Bos, there is óne who cares for this wretch and shields him from the world: Gorrabrog, Woelddekennig of Sutwette*.
GORRABROG, Lord of the Southern Forest
Like others of his kind he can shift the trees around and guide unwitting travellers around as he pleases, thus keeping them safe from Grenggts’ wrath, and protecting Grenggt from even more harmful outside influence.
Notes
Suttwette — Enormous forest, seemingly without end. There are some farmsteads and small settlements along its border but except for woodsmen, trappers and lumberjacks noone ever ventures far into its depths. Part of it can be seen on this map.
It is a place of great beauty, with secluded coves, small glittering lakes and sun-kissed clearings. In all of Bos it is presumably where most of the Woelddemen reside.
(From Dutch: Zuid Woud, ‘South Wood’)
Kwynbos — Silent Wood
Grunnethorn — Ground-Horn, a burrowing creature that somewhat resembles a hominid boar, with overgrown tusks, able to duel bulls, dig enormous holes and uproot trees.
(From Dutch: grond, ‘ground’ and hoorn, ‘horn’)
Woelddekennig — ‘Forest King’, most ancient among the Wild Men, these benevolent beings possess an unsurpassed intimacy with the woods that birthed them.
(From Dutch: woud, ‘wood, forest’ and koning, ‘king’)
