“Aedelart wrestles the Great Wurm.”
Vaader Aedelart
is the near-mythical
founder of Huys Aedelart.*
HE EMERGED from the forested mountains of Saksse and traveled West until he reached the swampy shoreline of Scheldtland‡. There he built a raft and went on to make his way along the numerous islands. On each of those adventure and discovery awaited. He became known to the Scheldtlanders as a stout warrior and shrewd diplomat, who brought organization and safety to the area.
AEDELART REACHED the pinnacle of his heroics when he was lifted out of the waters by a great Worm, while sailing to the city of Neus§.
This creature was feared for swallowing whole nets full of fish, dragging boats into the depths and ripping off sails to adorn itself. First the beast stole his sail, then it splintered his oars, and finally ate his boat. Right when Aedelart was to become the main course he drove his harpoon through the monster’s eye and into its brain. The foul thing collapsed on a small rocky island where Aedelart was marooned for one day and one night before Neus fishermen brought him aboard.
FROM THAT MOMENT Vaader Aedelart’s fame was firmly established across the land. He built his tower, Aedelbuerg, on the remains of the great Worm and from here many generations of Huys Aedelart have guaranteed safe passage among the islands, up to this day.
While little written proof of his existence remains, the oral tradition of the region contains numerous references to this manly man and his many adventures.
